If you only have one CompuTrainer, RacerMate One is very good at what it does. The major drawback to RacerMate One is for those studios that have more than 2 CompuTrainers, since RacerMate One doesn't support the full 8 trainers for all software modes.

It bundles the 3D software, Real Course Video software, stand-alone Power, and Spin Scan. RacerMate One is CompuTrainer's software that comes with all new CompuTrainers and will also control older CompuTrainers. I'll describe what I consider the Big 4 software options, but there are many more available. There are several sources of graphics and courses and workouts (a "course" is slope/grade-based and based on some real or fictional course, such as Wildflower or Ironman 70.3 Boulder, whereas a "workout" is erg-based and based on efforts at different wattage requirements). No graphics, no videos, just resistance and effort. Some people use their CompuTrainers in stand-alone mode, and set a wattage to be maintained and just ride. And the software's user interface and courses/workouts.

However, the longer answer is yes, to use the full functionality and benefit of the CompuTrainer, you'll want some type of software. The short answer is no, as the CompuTrainer will run using 50 pre-loaded stand-alone programs, which are discussed here: Successfully competed in 5 Ironman events. The question arose about whether CompuTrainers need software to run, and specifically RacerMate One software. Includes trainer, controller, PC/heart rate/cadence-speed cable adapters, AC adapter, two interactive videos, installation software and instructions.

Bought an extra trainer for my wife and it was rarely used as we have two Computrainers. Like new RaceMate Computrainer Pro with two interactive course videos (Ironman Wisconsin & Kona). Racemate Computrainer Pro Bike Trainer w/ 3D Interactive Videos. Item: 165100927005 Racemate Computrainer Pro Bike Trainer w/ 3D Interactive Videos.
